Minor Championship Semi-final: Magherafelt 2-4 Ballinderry 3-10

Magherafelt lost their bid to reach the minor final in a competitive and entertaining game against Ballinderry at Rossa Park on Sunday. Despite a sterling effort from all the girls, they could not overcome a more experienced Ballinderry side. Played a very fast pace, the sides swapped scores throughout the first half, with the Shamrocks edging ahead at the break. However, the experience of the Ballinderry girls helped them convert their chances more efficiently and they ran out comfortable winners. Well done to all the Rossa players who kept the pressure on until the final whistle and were very unlucky with some goal chances in the later stages.

Rossa scorers: Nicola Crilly (2-0), Dervla McGuckin (0-3), Niamh McGuckin 0-1.

Rossa: Aimee McGuckin, Danielle Shivers, Sinead Comer, Suin Smylie, Niamh O’Loughlin, Gabriella McNicholl, Eimear Cassidy, Dervla McGuckin, Niamh McGuckin, Orlagh McCollum, Brid Corrigan, Edel Gilligan, Clare Shields, Nicola Crilly (C), Bronagh McGuckin. Subs. Naomi Lamont for Gabriella McNicholl.

Underage camogie training (U8, U10, U12) continues at Rossa Park 6.45-8pm on Monday nights.

Minor Football Championship Final

Magherafelt 0-6 Glen 1-11 :

Magherafelt were well beaten by Glen in the final of the Minor Championship at Slaughtneil on Sunday evening. The Rossa’s took an early two point lead but they were soon pegged back by a strong and skillful Glen side. At half time Glen had a two point advantage, leading on a scoreline of 1-05 to 0-6. Glen came out very strongly in the second half stretching their lead with some well taken points. Magherafelt had a second half goal disallowed for a square ball and from this moment on the writing was on the wall. The Rossa’s failed to register a score in the second half, which contributed to a disappointing day for all concerned.

3rds Football

Magherafelt Thirds 1-09 Doire Trasna 0-10

Rossa Thirds finished their league programme with a 2 point win against Junior Champions Doire Trasna and with this win earned Rossa a top of the table position in the Division 3 league. However we have just been informed that the Thirds now face a play off with the second placed team in the league. Second place will be determined this week, but it will either be Ardmore or Doire Trasna. I very tight game throughout with Seamus Quinn leading the team from centre back with a great performance. The all important goal was punched to the net with only minutes to play By Niall Bryson Team and scorers Conor Mc Larnon,Paul Brown,Gareth Cassidy,Oliver Cunningham,Thomas Cassidy,Seamus Quinn,Sean Dillon,Eamon Lennox,Kieran McGlone,Sean Ludlow,Damien McErlain 0-3,Thomas Niblock,Ciaran Higgins 0-5 Adrian Mc Guckin,Nigel Dillon 0-2,Geoffrey Higgins,Robert OKane,Niall Bryson 1-0 Aodhan Mc Guckin,Darren O Hagan,Dermot Shaw.

Club Notes Week beginning 26th September

Brigid Heavron Memorial Tournament (U8 &U10)

On Saturday 24th September, the inaugural Brigid Heavron Memorial Tournament took place.  Although involved in many aspects of the club, Brigid is fondly remembered by the many parents and members of Rossa Og for her tireless support of Rossa Primary Coaching.  It was only fitting then that we remember her in our underage games and we hope to make this an annual event in her memory.  We thank Brigid’s sons, William, Danny and Shane for allowing us to remember Brigid through this tournament.  We would also like to thank Brigid’s former employers, the Ulster Bank for their sponsorship of the tournament.

Many thanks must go to anyone who helped on the day, too many to mention, and the support we received was a testament to the high esteem in which Brigid was held.  Anyone who was there on the day will agree that the grounds were in fantastic condition and the tournament went like clockwork.  We would like to thank any referees from outside the club who helped us out, again showing the strength of the GAA family. We would also like to thank Genesis Bakery for their kind donation and Cathcart Centra for assistance with the tuck shop. Finally we would like to thank all patrons who made a financial donation to Charis Care, which was the nominated Charity for the day.

Almost 400 Under 8 and Under 10 footballers arrived at Rossa Park from all over the county.  Clubs taking part were the host club Rossas, Bellaghy, Lavey, Dungiven, Coleraine, Loup, Swatragh, Kilrea, Newbridge, and Balinascreen.  The games got underway at 10.30am and went like clockwork until the finals at 3.00pm.  Some of the football on display was a joy to watch and at all times was played in good spirit.  All players were given medals for their participation.

The sun shone all day long at Rossa Park, no doubt we had someone special sending us such fine weather !!!

The competition itself was run off in an “A” and “B” basis to ensure all children got to participate.  The winners were as follows;

Under 10 “A” Cup Winners – Bellaghy

Under 10 “A” Shield Winners – Dungiven

Under 10 “B” Cup Winners – Loup

Under 10 “B” Shield Winners – Dungiven

Under 8 “A” Cup Winners – Lavey

Under 8 “A” Shield Winners – Ballinascreen

Under 8 “B” Cup Winners – Magherafelt

Under 8 “B” Shield Winners – Balinascreen

Pride of place for the Rossas must go to the Under 8 “B” team who went through the tournament undefeated and brought home the Cup after a fine win in the final against a very strong Dungiven team.  The panel was – Michael Mc Kay, Leon Martin, Odhran Martin, Luke Mc Cann, Ben Diamond, Ronan Walls, Jack Johnston, Cahir Quinn, Callum Campbell, Lorcan Bradley, Patrick Lavery and Conor Grimes. Well done boys !

The Under 8 “A” team also played very well but were unfortunate to lose to a talented Lavey team in the Cup semi final by a single point.  They went through the group stages undefeated and unfortunately didn’t have any luck in the semi final.  The panel was – Eoin Mc Evoy, Tiarnan Loughran, Oisin Quinn, Dan Higgins, Dara Wade, Michael Mullan, Ryan Lennox, Niall Bateson, Shea Mc Corry, Aaron Donnelly, Jamie Gribben and Rory Clark.

The Rossas also entered a “C” team who played in the Under 8 “B” group.  The Panel was – Eoin Mc Kee, Conor Mc Kee, David Donnelly, Jarlath Gormley, Oisin Mc Cabe, Odhran Crozier, Conal Higgins, Rachel Tohill, Caolan Higgins, Caolin Mac an Fhirleighinn, Sean Walls and Callum Lynch.  They had a great win in their opening match and battled hard in their other two group games.

Camogie

 U16 Camogie League: Magherafelt 4-4 Castledawson 2-2

The girls had a good win over neighbours Castledawson on Monday night.  In very wet conditions, the girls got to work straight away, putting Castledawson under a lot of pressure, with some well taken goals from Brid Corrigan and Claire Shields.  Further scores from Niamh McGuckin and Brid put the Rossas six points clear at the break.  The Rossas continued to dominate in the second half, with Lauren Kearns and her defenders dealing with anything that came their way while Niamh McGuckin and Siobhan Comer provided some quality balls into Magherafelt’s hungry forward line who were more than willing to convert.  Castledawson scored a couple of late consolation goals but this wasn’t enough to deny the Rossas.  The girls are in action next weekend in the Ulster U16 Tournament in Ballymena.

Team : Lauren Kearns, Aislinn McGuckin, Niamh O’Loughlin, Danielle Shivers, Eadaoin Smylie, Sinead Comer, Katie McGuckin,  Niamh McGuckin (0-1), Siobhan Comer, Niamh McGarry, Ciara Monaghan, Eimear Cassidy, Clare Shields (1-0), Brid Corrigan (3-3), Naomi Lamont. Subs. Caroline Collins for Naomi Lamont, Kerri Martin for Claire Shields, Ellie McGuckin for Niamh McGarry, Colleen Wade.

The minor camogs are through to the semi-final of the championship shield and will face Ballinderry next weekend at Rossa Park.  The U14s suffered only their second defeat in the league when a depleted Rossa side lost to Banagher.  The senior camogs have one outstanding league fixture against Dungiven to be arranged.
