Under 21 – Jack Cassidy Cup

Magherafelt 1-09 Slaughtneil 0-09

The U21s won their 1st round game in the Jack Cassidy Cup against Slaughtneil at Rossa Park on Thursday night past, in what was a spirited hard fought affair. Slaughtneil dominated the first three quarters of the match leading by 2 points going into the last 15 minutes as the Rossa’s looked out of sorts. Magherafelt then found their stride with Peter Quinn equalizing from Full Back with a great score from 40 yards, after running the length of the pitch, to leave it a draw at the end of normal time. Magherafelt 1-06 Slaughtneil 0-09.

Extra time was then dominated by the home side and the Rossa’s kicked the only 3 scores in this period to carve out a good win. The extra period will have done the team no harm at all as they await the winners of Loup v Kilrea – both very strong sides at this level.

Scorers: Peter Quinn 0-1, Niall Higgins 0-1, Fergal Duffin 0-1, Peter

McErlain 0-1, Anton McElhone 1-01, John Young 0-1, Conor Kearns 0-2,

Shane Heavron 0-1.

Club Notes Week beginning 24th October

Senior Football : Magherafelt 0-10 Kilrea 1-10 Magherafelt hosted Kilrea in their last game of the season in a wet and wintery Rossa Park. Kilrea coming off the back of the championship run were first to burst to life, going into an early three point lead after five minutes. Rossa finally responded with a good long range point from captain Keenan, with two more points from Heavron and Kearns. Kilrea however continued to dictate the pace and moved into a six points to three lead. Magherafelt dominated the final ten minutes with two points from S Heavron, and one from Keenan to leave the half time score six points each. Kilrea with a goal from Quigg again burst into an early second half lead and Magherafelt failed to close the gap despite a few close goalmouth shaves. Both teams scored four points each in the second half. The Magherafelt points from J Monaghan, S Heavron, A McElhone and E McGuckin. Goals win games and unfortunately Magherafelt lost out this time. However the very young team with six players just out of minors put up a spirited performance and will look forward to next years league with little fear. The Thirds footballers still have to play their Intermediate Reserve Championship semi final against Steelstown and their league final play off against Doire Trasna. Dates for these fixtures still have to be agreed.

Senior Football : Magherafelt 3-11 Banagher 1-6 Magherafelt secured a very good home victory against a strong Banagher team on Friday night. They went into an early lead with a Monaghan point in the first minute followed by a well taken Spiers goal after five minutes. The team relaxed and played good support play to lead by 3-05 to 0-04 at half time. The other first half goals came from Spiers and Monaghan. Banagher struggled to score from play with only PJ McCloskey making any inroads into a fast tackling Rossa defence. Banagher emerged stronger after the break and had an early goal chance skim wide. They created some problems with route one ball to Lynch who moved to the edge of the square. The Rossa boys weathered the storm and picked off points from Monaghan, McGuckin, McCabe and Spiers. Lynch scored an excellent goal after twelve minutes of the second half to keep the game alive but Magherafelt finished strongly with minor star Shane Heavron driving over two excellent points and also hitting the cross bar. Banagher missed a penalty in the last minute to leave the Rossa’s deserving winners. Senior Football

Magherafelt 2-11 Castledawson 1-8

Magherafelt picked up two valuable points at home to Castledawson on Sunday. The match was keenly contested with the Rossa pulling ahead on a 1-03 to 0-02 lead after ten minutes courtesy of 1-02 from play from Spiers. His accuracy continued as he hit a further two points in the half supported by two Kearns points and a McElhone long rang effort. Half time 1-08 to 0-03 for Magherafelt. A more determined Dawson entered the fray in the second half and three pointed frees in a row brought them back into the game. However points from McGuckin and Spiers and an opportunist goal from Higgins opened an unassailable lead for the Rossa. Castledawson did score another 1-01 but it was too little too late.

Ladies Football U15 A Championship

Rossas Win U 15 County Final in thrilling contest with Glen

Rossas U15 Ladies produced a fantastic performance at Ballymaguigan on Friday night to win the County Title with a one point victory over a very strong Glen team. The game was a classic with both teams contributing to what was a great advertisement for the ladies game.

Glen started strongly and raced into a four point lead after ten minutes, dominating in all sectors and Magherafelt looked to be in trouble. Magherafelt gradually began to find their feet however and Leonie McErlain and Nira Walls in midfield began to win possession and drive forward to great effect. The lively Courtney Brown opened the Rossas account with a well taken point and corner forward Aoife McAleenan then capitalised on a mistake in the Glen defence to score a great goal and bring the teams level. Rossa were now dominant and the half forward line of Siobhan Comer, Aideen Fullen and Niamh Kerr caused Glen problems with their strong running and workrate. Points followed from Courtney Brown and Niamh Kerr (2) and when Courtney Brown took a good pass from Ellie McGuckin to fire an unstoppable shot to the net Magherafelt were six up . Glen responded with 3 points on the trot before Aideen Fullen scored just before the break to leave the half time score Rossa 2-05 Glen 0-07.

Glen came out much the stronger in the second half and reduced the deficit to two points after ten minutes. The Maghera team were now well on top and took the lead again with a well worked goal. A point followed quickly and at this stage Magherafelt were 2 behind and in trouble, once again however the reds responded and Leonie McErlain began to dominate the midfeld sector winning plenty of ball and running strongly at the Glen defence. The impressive Niamh Kerr fired over two points to level matters and the same player then lobbed a dangerous free into the Glen square which managed to end up in the goal. Rossas were now 3 ahead and when Aideen Fullen fired over a good point they were 4 points up entering the last 10 minutes.

The reigning Feile champions were in no mood to give up however and once again the pendulum swung towards Glen as they brought the game to Magherafelt. At this stage the Rossa defence was immense with captain Ciara Monaghan leading by example ably supported by Claire Shields and Lauren Hughes in the half back line who fought to keep Glen at bay. Glens pressure then paid off when their full forward scored a great goal to leave the minimum between the teams again. The intensity of the game then began to tell with several players succumbing to cramp and when referee Joe Mulholland signalled that there would be 10 minutes injury time it looked as if Glen had the momentum to go on and win the game. Several chances were squandered however and Magherafelt keeper Lauren Kearns lifted the siege with some intelligent kick outs won by the hardworking Nira Walls. The last 5 minutes were nailbiting and the Rossa full back line of Eadaoin Smylie,Katie McGuckin and Maria McVeigh all made important clearances. Niamh McGarry who was unable to start for the Rossas through injury used her experience to steady the defence in the last few minutes and when the final whistle sounded Magherafelt had won on a 3-08 to 2-10 scoreline.

County Board representative Paddy McIvor presented the trophy to Rossa captain Ciara Monaghan with the player of the match award going to the excellent Leonie McErlain. Overall this was fantastic game between two well matched teams who now doubt will meet again in the years ahead.
