Continuing success for Rossa Ballad Group in Scor nA nOg 2012 as they reach the Ulster Final.

Sincere congratulations to our Rossa Scor Ballad Group comprising of Lauren Millar, Sarah McErlain, Eimear Kearney, Aideen McAuley and Enya Loughlin, as their Scor 2012 journey continues.

They emerged as County Champions in Glenullin, following a closely contested round of semi finals consisting of a total of approximately 15 ballad groups, and despite a close challenge from Glen they managed to secure the title. They proceeded to take part in the Ulster semi-final on 10th December again at Glenullin against Antrim and Down (incidentally the Saul Ballad group who won the All Ireland Title in 2011) and following a confident performance they secured a win earning their place in the Ulster final.

This will take place in Galbally Co. Tyrone on January 14th 2012, and your support would be greatly appreciated. Well done girls and thanks for your commitment and hard work to date, good luck!

Thirds Win Intermediate Reserve Championship

Magherafelt Thirds 2-08 – 0-7 Swatragh Reserves

The Thirds finished their long season with a great win in the final of the Intermediate reserve Championship at the excellent new development at Desertmartin on Saturday 12th .
This games was a very tight affair for 50minutes with the large crowd throughly entertained with lots of effort being put in by both teams before the Rossa lads pulled away in the final 10-15 minutes .

Swatragh opened the scoring through Michael Kirkpatrick before Kieran McGlone leveled for the Rossa. Seamus Mc Quillian then raced away from two Rossa defenders and kicked Swatragh into a 0-1 to 0-2 lead. Lots of heavy tackles were flying in at this stage and following a well worked attack Conor Monaghan again levelled the scores and 5 minutes later Damien Mc Erlain put Magherafelt in front for the first time with a point from a narrow angle. 0-3 – 0-2

The first Rossa goal came when Kieran McGlone kept alive a ball on the by line before beating a tackle and off loading to Sean Ludlow who fired the ball to the net to leave the Rossa leading by four points .

Swatragh were on top[ in the final few minutes of the half and could have had a goal only for an excellent save from Rossa keeper Danny McNeill . points from Mickey conway and an excellent long range point from Brian Diamond to reduce the arrairs to two points at half time. Rossa 1-3 to Swatragh 0-4

Swatragh started the second half well and Michael Kirkpatrick reduced the Magherafelt lead to a point and Swatragh pushed hard for the next five minutes but the Rossa defence worked very hard and refused to allow Swatragh to get level . Magherafelt gained control in Midfield were it was a real battle and indeed the Magherafelt men then had a ten minute spell where they effectivly won the game, on 42minutes following a foul on Adrian Mc Guckin, Thomas Niblock scored a fantastic point from a long freekick out on the side line. Ciaran Higgins pointed before Niblock again scored to put four points between the teams . with 52 minutes on the clock The Magherafelt team worked up the pitch and from a Peter O Neill pass Eamon Lennox burst past two Swatragh players and hammered the ball to the net for what was to be the fatal blow for the Davitts to put the Rossa lads in a great position with only eight minutes to play . Swatragh got a quick point back through Kirkpatrick again 2-6 to 0-6. Swatragh threw everything forward in hope of responding with a goal but they could not get past the Magherafelt backline and with Robert O Kane hitting a great tackle followed by a Conor Monaghan diving block the highlights of some great team work and determination to finish the game as winners it was clear to see that magherafelt were going to hold strong in the final minutes of the game. Ciaran Higgins scored two freekicks having been on the reciving end of a few heavy and high tackles and got his reward for a tough nights work in the final five minutes of the game with those two points and Michael Kirkpatrick got the final swatragh point inbetween Higgins two points to leave the Rossa winners on a 2-8 to 0-7 final scoreline.

A good finish to the season for the Thirds who have been working very hard to stay fit and do themselves justice in their Junior league indeed finishing top of Division Three and now winning the Intermediate Reserve Championship is great reward for them . Well Done lads.
