Reserve Football Championship

Magherafelt 1-09

Slaughtneil 1-13

The Rossa’s were unfortunate not to come away from this match with a win even though losing out by 4 points.  This was a tightly contested match from the start and it was only in the last few minutes of the game that Slaughtneil pulled away for victory.

The Rossas started brightly with a goal from Ryan Murphy.  Slaughtneil replied with 2 points from play before Jared Monaghan pointed following his return from injury.  Both sides exchanged points, John Young scoring the Rossas point leaving it 1-02 to 0-03.  However, Slaughtneil then raced into the lead scoring 3 points in a row before Enda McLaughlin scored an excellent long range point leaving the sides level at half time. 1-03 to 0-06.

Slaughtneil picked off from where they finished in the first half scoring 1-01 in the opening minutes of the second half.  However, the Rossas found new life and scored 5 unanswered points; 2 courtesy of Peter O’Neill, a John Young free & one each from Kieran McKay and Daniel McErlain.  This left the Rossa’s ahead by 1 and they had 2 further scoring chances to increase that lead but failed to convert these frees and Slaughtneil then found form.  They hit 4 points in a row to seal victory.  Final score Magherafelt 1-09 Slaughtneil 1-13.

Senior Football v Newbridge Report

Magherafelt 3-13
Newbridge 2-09

The Rossa’s won their second league game of the season defeating Newbridge in an entertaining match. The Rossa’s opened the scoring with a point from play from Emmett McGuckin; followed by an excellent score from Kieran McGlone to lead by 2. Newbridge first score could have been a goal when Barry Gillis deflected Burkes strike over the bar for a point. The Rossa’s replied quickly with a point from Philip McCabe following an interception from Kieran McGlone. The lead did not last for long as Newbridge took control and scored 4 unanswered points. Shortly after Paul Dillon got his first point of the day, followed by a pointed free by Chrissy Speirs the same player being fouled. Paul Purvis then broke out of defence and made a cross field pass to Gerard McKay who collected on the edge of the square to score the first goal of the game. Newbridge assisted by the breeze quickly replied with a further 2 points from play. However, the Rossas responded as Gerard McKay & Paul Dillon grabbed a point apiece. The Rossa’s now leading by a goal entering injury time lost the ball in attack & Newbridge capitalised scoring a point to leave two between the sides at half time.
The Rossas started the half brightly with a second goal from Gerard McKay however again Newbridge responded grabbing two successive goals; one from the penalty spot. Magherafelt introduced Jared Monaghan & now assisted by the breeze scored a further two points through Chrissy Speirs & Paul Dillon to take the lead once more. Newbridge could only manage one more score for the remaining half as the Rossas applied pressure scoring a further 1-04, 1-02 courtesy of Ryan Murphy.
