The senior camogs are still on track to do the league and championship double after an epic win over Drum. Played in terrible conditions on Wednesday night, the girls were tested to the limit and came out winners. A defensive error allowed Drum to go a goal ahead but the Rossas didnt panic, with Sinead McLaughlin and Kathy McGuckin picking off scores to put Magherafelt ahead midway through the first half. The loss of Sinead due to injury before the break was a massive blow but the girls showed amazing resilience in the second half against the wind and rain, with the defence keeping Drum at bay, while Dervla McGuckin and Caoimhe Toner drove forward tirelessly and linked well with the Rossa attack. The teams were level for much of the second half but the determination of the girls won through in the end with a superb and timely point from Dervla. This was a fantastic performance from the whole team, one which should give them confidence for the final on
Sunday 1st August.
Rossa: A McGuckin, L Johnston, M McCusker, S Comer, G McNicholl, S McCusker, S Devlin, D McGuckin, C Toner, B Corrigan, K McGuckin, J Lee, Niamh McGuckin, S McLaughlin, E O’Donnell. Sub. S Martin for S McLaughlin.

Sunday 1st August – Derry Junior Championship Final (Ballerin, 5pm): Magherafelt v Limavady

The club hosted a very successful Camogie u8 and u10 blitz at rossa pk on Saturday with teams from Dungiven, Castledawson and the Loup taking part. A great day was had by all.

The Rossa U16 camogs saw off their neighbours in the first round of the U16 camogie championship on Sunday at Rossa Park. Magherafelt were first off the block, with points from Niamh McGuckin and Brid Corrigan. Having missed a few goal opportunities early on, Magherafelt converted through Niamh Cushley before the break. The Rossas continued to dominate in midfield through Sinead Comer and Brid Corrigan while Gabriella McNicholl was in super form in centre half back. Orla McCollum scored a lovely long range goal to put Magherafelt in a more comfortable position. Eimear Bradley pulled on a long ball in from Sinead Comer to settle the affair. This was a great team performance from the girls and will give them a lift for the next round against Newbridge.

The under 14 camogs travelled to Granemore, Armagh on Saturday,1st May to take part in the under 14 Camogie feile.
The Rossa’s first match was against Keady. The girls started well, but despite fighting hard, lost out to an exceedingly strong Keady side.
They fared better against Na Magha, the only other Derry team in their division, and won convincingly with some excellent scores by the forwards and centre half forward line.
As this game was being played, Keady and Granemore, were engaged in a very tight Armagh grudge match on the other pitch, from which Granemore emerged victorious. Needless to say this was causing worries for the Rossa girls, having been previously beaten by Keady, Was our next match to be a one sided affair?
We broke for lunch and afterwards lined out against Granemore, sustained by ham sandwiches, buns and tea, it was a different bunch of girls who gave the Granemore lasses somewhat of a shock as the Rossas rattled their net with a fantastic goal near the end of the first half!
There were some stunning performances in this match in particular, Lauren Kearns sparkled at full back, pulling off some fantastic catches and clearing her lines time and time again, so much so, that Granemore moved one of their star players back to mark her. Shauneen McGuckin, was outstanding in goals and made up in bravery and skill what she lacked in height! Aislinn McGuckin was relentless also and caused the Granemore forwards plenty of trouble. Lauren Stewart played a blinder, always getting in the way of the rampaging Granemore forward line. Niamh McGarry, Caroline Collins and Siobhan Comer also played relentlessly, never giving up, despite taking some nasty injuries.
Eimear Cassidy and Ella McCann were both outstanding as was Niamh Kerr and Clare Shields.
Emer Bradley was exceptional in midfield and helped out in backs and forwards were needed. Eadaoin Smylie played exceptionally well and caused Granemore considerable worry at times as she pressed down the field and was a constant support to those around her. Ciara Monaghan also had a fine performance and was relentless down the wing, showing Granemore a cleanset of heels time and time again. Caoimhe Purvis and Niamh McGuckin came on fresh in the second half and also caused plenty of hassle for the Granemore girls.
All in all, despite the fact that we lost to a very strong Granemore side, the performance in this match was one to be exceedingly proud of and the experience of playing such tough teams will stand the girls in good stead for their 2010 league campaign which starts in the next few weeks.
Thanks to Geraldine McGuckin Lamont, Naomi Lamont, Bronagh McGuckin and Catherine Kane for their help and support on the day – Bring on the league!

Ballinderry made the perfect start with two quick goals and after five minutes the Rossa girls found themselves seven points in arrears. The bigger Ballinderry team adapted well to the atrocious conditions and at this stage Magherafelt were hanging on and battling to stay in the game .

They gradually got to grips with the conditions however and began to cause some problems for the home team. Aislinn McGuckin opened the scoring for Rossa with a well taken point and with Ciara Monaghan driving them forward from centre half back dominated the final minutes of the half. Courtney Brown and Lauren Kearns came more into the game and Magherafelt gained their reward with a goal and point from Courtney Brown. Ballinderry scored the final point of the half and at Half Time the Rossas went in 5 points down. Ballinderry 3-1 Rossa !-2

Ballinderry started the second half as they had started the first and immediately stretched the lead to seven with a well worked goal. The Magherafelt girls refused to give up and showed great determination to battle their way back into the game.

The half forward line of Niamh Kerr, Courtney Brown and Eimear Bradley began to get on the ball and with Lauren Kearns showing well at full forward the Rossas scored two points to reduce the deficit

Eimear Cassidy , Ciara Monaghan and Niamh McGarry in the half back line were now on top and a great move ended up with Courtney Brown finding the net , there were now only two points between the teams. The deficit was reduced to 1 with aonther fine point and at this Magherafelt were well on top.

Magherafelt were pushing hard for the equaliser at this stage and the Shamrocks were able to exploit some gaps at the back to score another goal to put four between the teams. Magherafelt pushed on again and Niamh Kerr pointed , Ballinderry however responded with another goal which proved to be the last score of a very competitive encounter.

Overall a good performance from the girls against a well organised and strong Ballinderry team

Training as usual Wednesday night.

Rossa 7-6 Ardtrea 0-5

Rossa U14 ladies started the season with good win over Ardtrea at Rossa Park on Sunday morning. Ardtrea made the better start and it required some good defending from Eaodaoin Smylie and Andrea Llaverty to keep them out. Rossa gradually got into the game and Ciara Monaghan and Courtney Brown began to get on the ball and cause problems for the opposition. Some excellent football led to early scores for Lauren Kearns and Clare Lynch and as the half came to a close Rossa had built up a good lead HT Rossa 4-3 Ardtrea 0-2

Rossa continued to dominate after the break with the midfield pairing of Nira Walls and Siobhan Comer working very hard and driving their team forward, Ellie McGuckin and Niamh Kerr linked up well and further scores came from Aislinn McGuckin and Niamh Kerr.

Ardtrea came back strongly in the last quarter and were rewarded with some well taken points, the Rossa defence stood firm however with Niamh McGarry and Claire Shields making some vital interceptions . Full forward Lauren Kearns capped a fine individual performance by completing the scoring with a well taken goal

Overall a good performance from the girls in the first game of the season, training as usual Wednesday night.

Team

Megan Mackle , Eaodaoin Smylie, Andrea Llaverty, Claire Shields, Eimear Cassidy,Ciara Monaghan,Niamh McGarry,Nira Walls,Siobhan Comer,Niamh Kerr,Courtney Brown,Ellie McGuckin,Kerry Martin,Lauren Kearns,Clare Lynch Subs Caoimhe Purvis, Aislinn McGuckin, Seaneen McGuckin,Brianna McNicholl, Nicole McKee,Caitlin McKee ,Shauna McLaughlin
