Senior & Reserve Football

Magherafelt 1-12 Glen 0-09

Magherafelt recorded their first league victory of 2011. They played with the breeze in the first half and went in at half time five points to three up. Early scores from J Monaghan, E McGuckin and R Ferris were equalled by two frees from C Bradley and a long range M O’Donnell point. Magherafelt scored the last two points of half from a J Young free and a C Kearns point on half time whistle.

In the second half Magherafelt outscored the visitors by 1-7 to 0-6 with excellent points from E McGuckin (0-2), J Young (0-2) the excellent C Kearns (0-3) and a last minute punched goal from E McGuckin.

Team – B Gillis, D Donnelly, D O’Neill, P Keilt, R Ferris (0-1), J Keenan, D Heavron,

J Monaghan (0-1), P McCabe, B Atckinson, E McGuckin (1-3), J Young (0-3), G McKay, C O’Brien, C Kearns (0-4) Subs C Smylie for B Atchinson

Magherafelt Reserves 4-13 Glen Reserves 0-7

This was a good even contest in first half with Rossa going in 3-5 to 0-7 leaders, courtesy of goals from A McElhone, P McCusker and D McErlean. Magherafelt were again the much the stronger unit in the second half and pulled away in the final 20 minutes.

Team C McLarnon, D McGuckin, C Bell, P O’Kane, K Purvis, C Moran (0-2), F Hegarty, D Donnelly, P McErlean, S McGuckin (0-3), J Higgins (1-2), A McElhone (1-2), P McCusker (1-1), D McErlean (1-1), P Dillon (0-2). Subs D McErlean, R Murphy, Q Gilmore

Thirds Football

Doire Trasna 0-14 Magherafelt Thirds 3-07

An excellent performance from the Thirds away at Doire Trasna saw them move to joint top of the Division 3 league. Having lost this fixture heavily at the start of last season not much was expected from this game but goals win games and Ciaran Higgins continues to find the net when it most matters, with his two goals, along with a Sean Ludlow goal, proving the difference in this exciting game at Altnagelvin.

Adrian McGuckin opened the scoring before Trasna got level. Then Damien Mc Erlain put the Magherafelt lads back in front. Trasna scored three unanswered points to lead 0-3 to 0-2. With 5 minutes to the half time break, Conor Monaghan won the ball at midfield and was fouled. He quickly looked up and played an inch perfect 40 meter pass to Ciaran Higgins, who was through on goal and scored to give the Rossa a two point half time lead.

Doire Trasna came out of the blocks flying in the second half and within ten minutes had rattled over five unanswered scores to lead by three points and with the wind in their backs all looked good for them. But sure enough up stepped Ciaran Higgins to round two players and place the ball in the bottom corner of the net to level the scores again. Sean Ludlow then found space and scored to put the Rossa back in the lead with Ciaran Higgins again scoring, this time after Conor Monaghan had been fouled and the Rossa where in front by two. Trasna again responded with two points, the second of which was a super point from all of 50 meters, to level the scores again . At this stage with 10 minutes remaining the game could have gone

either way and in days gone by the Thirds would have run out of steam. However after Sean Ludlow’s shot came back of the inside of the post the Rossa lads could have dropped their heads but they never did. Their defence stood firm with Gareth Cassidy fully in charge and after some excellent ball winning in midfield from Eamonn Lennox, Geoffery Higgins , Robert O Kane and Conor Monaghan, they came forward and again opened the home defence. Sean Ludlow was on hand to fire the ball into the back of the net to restore a three point advantage. Trasna again came back with a point Before Oliver Cunninham got on the end of a Damien Mc Erlain pass to confidently place the ball over the bar. Trasna again scored to reduce the lead to two points before Ciaran Higgins and Adrian Mc Guckin put the Rossa four points up just into the 60th min and although Trasna got two late points in injury time the Thirds held on to record an excellent win.

Team and scorers

Ladies Football

Congratulations to the Rossa Ladies footballers who won the County Derry Ladies ‘Derry’s Got Talent’ competition, which was held on Saturday night, in the Watty Graham’s Club in Maghera. The girls performed, what can only be described as a very unusual and somewhat surreal version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. There must have been some weird ideas going on in the minds and worlds of Choreographers Catherine Comer and Roisin McGuckin, as they planned their assault on this prestigious competition. But their hard work paid off as the young Rossa’s performed brilliantly on the night and retained this County Title, previously won by Edel Gilligan. Thanks to Catherine and Roisin for all their hard work. Thanks also to their ‘Roadies’ Stephen Comer and Patrick O’Donnell, for their support in the week leading up to the competition.

Dance Team – Brid Corrigan, Ellen Young, Niamh McGuckin, Emer O’Donnell, Aine O’Donnell, Claire Shields, Aimee McGuckin, Niamh Duffin, Sinead Comer, Siobhan Comer, Maeve Shields, Ellie McGuckin, Bronagh McGuckin, Aisleen McGuckin, Seanin McGuckin, Clodagh Young, Ciara Monaghan, Niamh Kerr, Rachael Walshe, (missing on night Oonagh Shields)

On Sunday evening Rossa Minors played Ballinascreen at Glen in the League Final. This was an evenly contested game, which was spoiled by a very strong breeze throughout. Ballinascreen played with the breeze in the first half, going into half time with a six point lead. Magherafelt came out strongly in the second half, scoring two goals, to give the Rossa’s a one point lead. But the Screen came back strongly in the last quarter to win by three points on a scoreline of 2-09 to 3-03.

Team – Lauren Kearns, Niamh Duffin, Aine O’Donnell, Lisa Walls, Sinead Comer, Dervla McGuckin, Brid Corrigan, Shannon McCrystal, Megan Smith, Gabriella McNicholl, Eimear O’Donnell (0-1), Aideen Fullen, Niamh McGuckin, Aimee McGuckin (2-2), Courtnay Brown (1-0), Subs – Siobhan Comer, Niamh McGarry, Niamh Kerr, Danielle Shivers, Ciara Monaghan, Claire Shields, Kerri McSorley, Katy McGuckin,

Other Ladies football games played during the past week included a minor league fixture at Rossa Park against Lissan, in which the Rossa’s enjoyed a comfortable win. The Senior Ladies also had a comfortable league win over Desertmartin at Rossa Park on Wednesday night past.

Team –

Congratulations to the six Rossa girls who were part of the Derry U14 Panel who defeated Antrim in the Ulster Championship Semi Final at Hannahstown, on a scoreline of 4-05 to 3-07. They are Ciara Monaghan, Niamh Kerr, Niamh McGarry, Siobhan Comer, Katy McGuckin and Leonie McErlain. Derry play Cavan in the Ulster final in a few weeks time..

Under 12 Football

The Under 12’s took part in the season’s first blitz, held at Owenbeg on Saturday past. The Rossa’s were paired in the same group as Steelstown and Coleraine. The blitz was again run in an ABC 9-a-side format. The young Rossa’s won five of the six very competitive games played. Although all Rossa players gave their best on the day, the players who shone were Giuseppe Lupari and Conor McCluskey for the A’s, Paul Pijl and Rory McAuley for the B’s and Jack Diamond and Cathaoir Purvis for the C’s.

A Team – Odhran Lynch, Ciaran Shields, Conor McCloskey, Jac Lloyd Evans, Simon McErlain, Giuseppe Lupari, Ciaran McKeever, Ryan Kearns, Liam Og McElhone

B Team – Shea Donnelly, Ben McErlain, Paul Pijl, Cormac Murphy, Peter Tohill, Rory McAuley, James Beggan, Declan Martin.

C Team – Brian Black, Emmet Young, Daniel Campbell, Johnny McErlain, Cathaoir Purvis, Jack Diamond, Matthew Millar

Camogie

Intermediate League Magherafelt 5-7 Glenullin 4-9

The senior camogs saw off a second half challenge from a committed Glenullin side to claim their first win in the league. Starting off at a blistering pace with a early point from Brid Corrigan, the Rossa girls were in fine form. They moved the ball forward quickly to a very effective forward line who made very good use of it with Nicola Crilly getting a hat-trick and Sinead McLaughlin scoring a couple of unstoppable goals.

Glenullin came out like a different team in the second half, putting the Rossa defence under a lot of pressure and gradually pulled the scores back til there was the slightest of margins. Magherafelt showed great resilience to hold on to win. The girls will learn much from this game, helping their confidence but warding against complacency. Next game on Thursday at home to Slaughtneil II.

Team – Aimee McGuckin, Sinead Comer, Sarah Martin, Gabriella McNicholl, Kathy McGuckin, Edel Crilly, Caoimhe Toner, Shauna McCusker, Dearbhla McGuckin, Brid Corrigan, Niamh McGuckin, Jenny Lee, Martine Crilly, Sinead McLaughlin, Nicola Crilly.

Ulster Feile

It was Ulster Feile weekend and the Rossa bus headed off bright and early on Saturday to Tullysaran in Co. Armagh to take on Dungiven, Banagher and Tullysaran. Despite being up against stiff competition, the Rossa girls put in some fine performances and had 3 great games. While they failed to qualify, the girls had a great day away and came away with their heads held high. Many thanks to all the parents who helped out and came and suppported the girls on the day.

Coleraine 1-10 Magherafelt 0-7

Magherafelt Seniors made the long journey on Easter Sunday to Portstewart to play the current County champions Coleraine. Playing against a strong breeze in first half the Rossa’s went in 1-4 to 0-2 down, with the Rossa scores coming from John Young, with frees in the 5th and 22nd minutes. In the second half Magherafelt dominated the midfield and drove forward on many occasions but they failed to achieve a score. John Young scored a point in the 3rd minute of the second half, followed by points from C Spiers and J Monaghan, which helped close the gap. Following these points Magherafelt had a controversial goal disallowed which prevented Rossa narrowing gap to two points. Coleraine then scored on the rebound attack. C Kearns pointed in 20th min and a C Spiers free in injury time completed the Rossa scoring. Coleraine scored mainly on the counter attack courtesy of four frees and two further points from play.

Magherafelt : B Gillis, M Collins, B Kerr, D Donnelly, D O’Neill, J Keenan, D Heavron, J Monaghan (0-1) P McCabe, C Kearns (0-1), C O’Brien, J Young (0-3), P Dillon, S McGuckin, E McGuckin

Subs C Spiers (0-2), B Atchinson, G McKay

Reserves

Coleraine 0-8 Magherafelt 3-11

The Reserves continued on their winning way, with a comfortable win over Coleraine. The Rossa’s led at half time by 2-4 to 0-5. In the second half Rossa extended their lead to end up easy winners.

Team : C McLarnon, P O’Kane, M Niblock, D McGuckin, P Kielt, C Bell, C Moran, B Atchinson (0-1), D McErlean (0-2), C McKay J Higgins (0-1), G McKay (0-4), P McCusker (0-2), A McElhone (2-2)

Under 8 Football

The U8s continued their pre-season friendlies with a very entertaining trip to our close neighbours Bellaghy. Bellaghy played host to the Rossas on a super sunny day which proved to be a very enjoyable occasion for both teams. Although some controversy surrounded the final scores in one of the games (2 brothers in opposing camps still unable to agree !!!), the enjoyment for all was plain to be seen. The progress made by the young Rossas was massive since these sides last met in the Meadowbank at the end of last season – well done. Both clubs had four teams playing at the same time, with each team getting 3 games each. This game should prove to be a good test before the first blitz of the season in Owenbeg on Friday 29th April. Rossa A team – Ryan Lennox, Leon Martin, Shea Mc Corry, Oisin Quinn, Ben Diamond, Dan Higgins, Michael Mullan, Darragh Wade, Rory Clarke, Aaron Donnelly. Rossa B team – Luke Mc Cann, Odhran Martin, Matthew Walshe, Jamie Gribben, Patrick Lavery, Ronan Walls, Callum Campbell, Eoin Mc Evoy. Rossa C team – Tiarnan Loughran, David Donnelly, Caolin Mc Erlean, Cahir Quinn, Conor Grimes, Odhran Crozier, Jarlath Gormley, Lorcan Bradley.

Rossa D team – Rachel Tohill, Aoibhinn Higgins, Eimear Lennox, Kate Higgins, Therese Tohill, Pearce Morgan, Conal Higgins, Caolin Higgins, Tom Henry, Stefan Lloyd-Evans. Although all the players thoroughly enjoyed the day, more was still to come. As the final whistle blew, one of the most recognisable sounds for any child under 8 was heard, Mr Whippy had just pulled through the gate and each child was treated to a free ice-cream. A fitting end to a great day !!! Many thanks to the Bellaghy club for their hospitality and hopefully we can return the favour later in the season at Rossa Park.

Rossa Primary Coaching

Rossa Og Primary Coaching returns to Rossa Park this Sunday, 1st May, 11.45am – 1.00pm. Cost £2. Tea, Coffee, Newspapers etc are available in the McFlynn Suite for those parents who wish to have a bit of ‘quiet time’ while the energetic activity is taking place outside.

Magherafelt 1-07 Slaughtneil 0-12.

This was a very close match from start to finish, with never more than two points between the teams at any one time and the lead changing hands constantly. Two points each from Emmet McGuckin and Conor Kearns, along with a single point from Paul Dillon, left the Rossa’s trailing by a single point at half time, on a scoreline of

0-6 to 0-5. The second half was equally competitive and close with further Rossa points coming from John Young and Conor Kearns. In the 14th minute of the second half Emmet McGuckin drove low to the net, to give Magherafelt a two point lead. However this was to be the Rossa’s last score of the game. They had numerous chances in the last fifteen minutes to gain a positive result, but four consecutive and unanswered points from Slaughtneil give them their winning two point margin.

Team : B.Gillis, D.Donnelly, B.Kerr, M.Collins, R.Ferris, J.Keenan, D.Heavron, P.McCabe, J.Monaghan, J.Young (0-1), G.McKay, C.Kearns (0-3), S.McGuckin, E.McGuckin (1-2), P.Dillon (0-1)

Reserves

Just like their Senior colleagues the Reserves lost by a two points against Slaughtneil. The final score being Magherafelt 2-09 Slaughtneil 2-11.

Thirds Football

Rossa Thirds 3-12 – 1-11 Drum

Rossa Thirds made it two wins from two games in division three on Friday night, with an entertaining game at Rossa Park against a determined Drum side. Ciaran Higgins was in top form, scoring 1-6 on the evening. The Thirds scored 2-3 in the opening 15 minutes of the game but Drum came back strong before the half time whistle to trail only 2-5 to 1-6. The second half was better from the home team. Despite going down to fourteen players during the second half, Rossa’s extended their advantage to win by seven points.

Team : Danny Mc Neill, Kevin Shaw, Gareth Cassidy, Aodhan Mc Guckin, Thomas Cassidy, Oliver Cunningham, Sean Dillon, Robert O Kane, Eamonn Lennox, Adrian McGuckin 1-0, Damien Mc Erlain 1-3, Paul Brown, Seamus Quinn, Ciaran Higgins 1-6, Nigel Dillon 0-2, Dermot Shaw 0-1, Shane Kerr, Mickey Smylie

Under 16’s Football

Magherafelt 2-11 Limavady 0-4

The U-16’s travelled across the Glenshane Pass to Limavady for their second league game of the season. The lads got off to a great start with a few well taken scores. This set the tone for the rest of the match as the lads pushed onto victory. Overall the team did very well and have their third league match this Thursday, at home to Bellaghy, throw in 7.00pm at Rossa Park. The team would greatly appreciate support from their fellow Rossa’s.

Ladies Football

Rossa Minor Ladies travelled to Craigbane to play their third league match of the season and continue their unbeaten run to date. Rossa proved too strong for Craigbane, taking a grip of the match early on, going in at half time leading 4-5 to

0-3. In the second half Rossa continued to dominate, playing some nice attacking football. They ended up winners on a scoreline of Rossa 6-10 Craigbane 0-4

Team : Gabriella McNicholl, Oonagh Shields, Aine O’Donnell, Naimh Duffin, Sinead Comer, Dervla McGuckin, Brid Corrigan, Nadiene O’Neill, Megan Smith (1-0), Shannon McCrystal, Eimear O’Donnell (1-2), Catherine Hegarty, Orlagh McCollum (0-4), Amy McGuckin (4-3), Niamh McGuckin (0-1), Subs : Lauren Kearns, Claire Shields, Ciara Monaghan, Naimh Kerr, Danielle Shivers, Bronagh McGuckin, Siobhan Comer, Aideen Fullen, Courtney Brown

Rossa Senior Ladies started their league season with an easy win at home against Steelstown. Rossa took some great scores and punished Steelstown on the attack. Steelstown proved dangerous on the break but Rossa went in at half time with a comfortable 5-8 to 1-2 lead. In the second half Steelstown narrowed the margin slightly with Rossa taking their foot off the pedal somewhat, however Rossa finished easy winners on a 6-14 to 3-7 scoreline.

Nicola Martin, Oonagh Shields, Aine O’Donnell, Karen O’Kane, Sinead Comer, Dervla McGuckin, Gabriella McNichol, Shauna McCusker, Megan Smith, Orlagh McCollum (0-4), Eimear O’Donnell (0-1), Sinead McLaughlin, Niamh McGuckin (3-1), Amy McGuckin (3-7), Eilis Keenan (0-1) Subs : Emma McOscar, Lisa McIlhone, Niamh Duffin

Camogie

Senior camogie – Intermediate League: Glen 3-10 Magherafelt 1-5

Returning from a productive year in the junior division, the senior camogs had a tough fixture away to Glen. The girls took a wee while to get used to the pace, nervously letting Glen get a few crucial goals. However, they got to grips with the game and were unlucky on a number of occasions before Erin O’Loughlin grabbed a great goal just before the break. The Rossas hit the ground running in the second half and piled on the pressure, Sinead McLaughlin pointing soon after her arrival. The half back line of Shaunagh Devlin, Edel Crilly and Shauna McCusker made some great clearances and supplied some great balls to the Magherafelt attack, who were denied on 4 or 5 occasions by some fine goalkeeping by the Glen keeper. Making it difficult for Glen to clear their lines, Dearbhla McGuckin made good use of the resulting frees with 3 lovely points. However, Glen had too much of a head start for Magherafelt to recover from and they ran out winners. There were plenty of positives from this game which the team will want to build on in their next league game against Glenullin on 28th April.

Rossa: Aimee McGuckin, Danielle Shivers, Sarah Martin, Sinead Comer, Shaunagh Devlin, Edel Crilly, Shauna McCusker, Dearbhla McGuckin (0-3), Caoimhe Toner, Brid Corrigan, Jenny Lee, Niamh McGuckin, Nicola Crilly, Martine Crilly, Erin O’Loughlin (1-0). Subs. Sinead McLaughlin (0-2) for Erin O’Loughlin, Niamh O’Loughlin for Danielle Shivers, Louise Keightley for Nicola Crilly.

U14 League: Magherafelt 6-2 Na Magha 0-0

The U14 camogs got off to a great start on Saturday with a convincing over Na Magha. This was a very solid performance from the whole squad and is a sign of the progress the girls have made under their new manager, Caoimhe Toner. The girls can now look forward to their next outing at the Ulster Camogie Feile.

Rossa: Kerri Martin, Labhaoise Kerr, Aislinn McGuckin, Coleen Wade, Eadaoin Smylie, Katie McGuckin (0-1), Ciara Monaghan, Siobhan Comer (1-0), Niamh McGarry (1-1), Shauneen McGuckin (2-0), Maria Doyle (1-0). Subs. Ellie McGuckin, Shauneen O’Neill, Brainna McNicholl, Ella McCann, Niamh McGuckin, Francesca McKee, Caroline Collins, Chloe Walls (1-0).

Ulster Feile – The U14 girls will be representing the club at the Ulster Camogie Feile on Saturday 30th April. The girls are doing some fundraising and will be holding a coffee morning and cake sale soon – details to follow soon.

Congratulations to Brid Corrigan and Niamh McGuckin and their Derry team-mates who won the Ulster U16A Camogie Championship on Saturday. Derry defeated Antrim 3-08 to 3-04, with our Brid scoring Derry’s first goal. Well done girls.
