The rossas made a good start with a victory against a tricky Saul team,Guiseppi lupari making some vital saves in goal. The next match saw them take on Lavey in which they stayed on top until the final minutes when lavey won with a last gasp point, cormac murphy and ciaran shields staring in this one.Next up was Ballymaguigan and with the Rossas trailing at half time, and facing elimination,it took a strong half time team talk and a few tactical changes for the Rossas to emerge determined and book their place in the knock out stages with victory,Oran lynch with some stunning long range points.
The quarter final draw saw us overcome a strong Kilrea team, thanks to fine play from Cianan mccann, and scores from Patrick mclarnon.Next up was a very fancied Bellaghy team in the semi final, with Brian black strong in goal,Ben mcerlein in defence,Simon mcerlein in midfield and Ryan kearns full forward the Rossas powered to victory, not forgetting a great goal by peter tohill.
The final had us drawn against old foes Lavey.Everone gave it thier all in this one but we just fell short, with Lavey narrowly beating us,a goal conceeded on the stroke of half time, and a last gasp strike hitting the post proving to be the killer blows.Ryan kearns stunning goal being the highlight. The Rossas played brilliant throughout the day and deserved more, but we must learn from this defeat and are already looking forward to the next tournament.Cianan Mccann,Conor mccann,Cathal martin,Cal heaney,Cahir purvis ,Ben mcerlein and Rory bradley who all played their part in helping get us to the final, will all be hoping to go one better next year!
Special thanks to all in Newbridge for your hospitality and organisation, which made it a memorable day for all.
They played against Ballinderry, Lavey and Kilrea in the group stage, beating Ballinderry and Kilrea and losing narrowly to Lavey by 2 points.

This meant that Magherafelt qualified for the Cup competition and were drawn against Lavey in the semi-final. Lavey got off to a good start with an early goal, however, as the game went on Magherafelt replied with some fine scores and an end to end contest finished with Magherafelt pushing hard for the draw / win. In the end, a very good Lavey side won by 2 points but it could have gone either way.

No-one could fault the effort, commitment and skill shown by our P5 Rossa Ogs who played all their games with tremendous attitude and spirit – Well Done !!! There were many outstanding individual displays as well as very good team performances and this tournament was a very good learning experience for these players who will soon be moving on to U10.

We would like to thank Newbridge for their kind invitation, the fantastic hospitality and the excellent t

ournament which was thoroughly enjoyed by our players, parents and coaches. A big thank you to our parents for their support and transport both of which are very much appreciated.

Rossas edge out Craigbane in thriller

Magherafelt retained their U16 county title with a hard earned victory over old rivals Craigbane under lights at Ballymaguigan on Wednesday night. The match was a real thriller and a great advertisement for ladies football which kept the sizeable crowd entertained from start to finish

Magherafelt started strongly and after ten minutes had raced into to 1-2 to no score lead, the goal coming from Niamh McGuckin with points from team captain Aimee McGuckin and the impressive Orla McCollum. The Rossas half back line of Sinead Comer,Catherine Hegarty and Brid Corrigan were driving their team forward however several scoreable chances were missed and this allowed the North Derry girls to get back into the game. Craigbane then had a period of dominance with their impressive midfield duo gaining control, they quickly scored three unanswered points and were denied two certain goals by excellent saves from the Rossa keeper Lauren Kearns.

As the first half drew to a close the sides traded scores with Aimee Mcguckin and Orla McCollum on target again for Magherafelt ,it took some excellent defending from Oonagh Shields and Niamh Duffin to keep Craigbane out and the half ended on a scoreline Rossa 1-4 Craigbane 0-5.

Craigbane came out strongly in the second half and reduced the deficit to the minimum within 5 minutes. They were on top at this stage and would have taken the lead if it were not for some wasteful shooting. Magherafelt then introduced Catherine McColgan at midfield and she made an immediate impact winning possession and getting on top of the Craigbane midfield. Magherafelt then had a purple patch which saw them score 3-2 without reply and effectively win the game. Gabriella McNicholl now operating at half forward was winning a lot of ball and on the other wing Nira Walls and Courtney Brown were causing problems for the Craigbane defence. Aimee McGuckin scored a fine individual goal and this was followed by and excellent point from Orla McCollum . When Niamh McGuckin fired to the net the Rossas were ahead by eight and well on top. The game looked to be over when Courtney Brown scored a fantastic goal leaving Magherafelt ahead by 11 points 4-5 to 0-6. Orla McCollum pointed again and Magherafelt looked to be out of sight.

Craigbane had other ideas however and laid siege to the Rossa goals for the last ten minutes , they scored two quick goals and the Rossa girls were now hanging on. Aine O Donnell and Ciara Monaghan were fantastic for the Magherafelt girls in this period and cleared the ball time and again. The mid field duo of Nadine O Neill and Catherine McColgan won some crucial possession and when the referee blew for time Magherafelt were ahead by three.

Aimee McGuckin received the cup on behalf of the Rossas with the outstanding Brid Corrigan receiving the player of the match award.

This was a fantastic game and a credit to both clubs, thanks must go to the Ballymagiugan club who at short notice made their fantastic facilities available for the game,
