Half time score
Clan 2.05 Magherafelt 0.04
Magherafelt made the long journey to Lurgan for the final round of the Ulster league. The match was played in ideal weather conditions although the underfoot conditions left a lot to be desired. Magherafelt lost the toss and had to play into a slight breeze in the first half. Jared Monaghan and Ciaron McGlone opened the scoring for the visitors but Clan quickly replied with three points on the trot to take a one point lead after nine minutes. The game developed into a good physical battle as both teams struggled to open up play due to the ground conditions. Clan Na gael then hit a purple patch scoring two well worked goals to open a commanding lead. Frank Niblock eased Magherafelt back into the match courtesy of two frees but the Rossas were also guilty of some woeful shooting and poor long distance frees. Clan finished the scoring with two well taken long range points to go in at half time leading by seven.
The Rossa with the assistance of the breeze opened the scoring with a Niblock point before Monaghan drove through the middle to blast to the net. Magherafelt had got the start they desired and suddenly the game was on. Declan McErlean then scored a great goal on his senior debut and further points from Niblock and McGlone left only two points between the sides midway through the half. Both teams took turns scoring and the game hung nicely in the balance. Clan were two points up going into the last five minutes when their goal keeper misplaced a kick out. Declan McErlean received the ball thirty metres out and drove into the square to slot home the winning score. Overall this was a very commendable battling performance with dogged persistence and a willingness to play to the final whistle resulting in a good away win.
SENIOR REPORT
Glen 1.10 Rossa 1.06
Magherafelt fielded with an under strength team in this Ulster league game away to Glen. Despite this they put in a very spirited performance and were leading with seven minutes left on the clock. Unfortunately Glen won a disputed penalty with five minutes left and run out four point winners.
Glen started fasted and fired over two points courtesy of p mcconnell and C Bradley. The Rossas with the benefit of the slight breeze gradually fought back. Darren McGuckin won excellent ball in the inside line and won two thirty metre frees which Frank N iblock converted. Frank fired over his third point to put Magherafelt in the lead for the first time after fifteen minutes. Jared Monaghan converted a massive fifty metre free and Shay Atckinson with a point from play gave Rossas a five point to two lead. Glen countered strongly and Neil Convery was forced to make two excellent goal mouth saves. The pressure eventually told and points from MCCambley, Bradley and Burke left the score line five each at half time.
Magherafelt started the second half strongly with Jared Monaghan putting them into an early lead. However Glen used the slight breeze and dominated the next fifteen minutes and took the lead via points from the Bradleys. Magherafelt were now dependent on sporadic attacks as the stronger Glen team took control around mid field. In one of these attacks Phillip O’Neill scored an opportunist goal when the ball re-bounded off he upright and he calmly slotted it to the net through a crowded goalmouth. Glen launched a series of ounter attacks and were awarded a fortuitous penalty which turded the game in the dying minutes. McCamley slotted the ball to the net to put Glen two up. They won the final two kickouts and scored points from McLaughlin and Brdley to finish four point winners. Overall Magherafelt can be satisfied with a workman like performance and it has demonstrated that many of their young players have the ability to play at the top level. Notable performers were Neil Convery very sound in goals, Michael Monaghan and Joe Keenan in defence ,Darren McGuckin and Frank Niblock in forwards.
